i want america to lead the world in research and technology and clean energy. i want to put people back to work rebuilding our roads and bridges and our schools. and i want to do all this while bringing down our deficits in a balanced and responsible way. [ applause ] on this last point, you probably heard a lot of talk in washington and in the media about the deedlines that we're facing on jobs and taxes and investment. this is not some run-of-the-mill debate. this isn't about which political party can come out on top in negotiations. we've got important decisions to make that are going to have a real impact on businesses and families all across the country. our long-term goal is to get our long-term deficit under control in a way that is balanced and is fair and that would be good for businesses, for our economy, for future generations. and i believe both parties can and will work together in the coming weeks to get that done. we know how that gets done. we're going to have to raise a little more revenue, we've got to cut out spending we don't need, building

they do that so before a big vote on, say, an energy bill that will make oil companies really rich, you can't go to a big oil company and say, hey, don't you think i'd make a good executive vice president who doesn't do anything but makes a ton of money for not doing it? but makes way less money than you'll make if this bill i'm going to be voting on passes? we want to know that kind of thing if it's happening. so you have to file this paper and demint filed his paper only yesterday. according to him, these negotiations began and ended in 24 hours. that is very decisive for leaving the u.s. senate. and if it is true then it's really looking like the heritage foundation and jim demint saw an opportunity in the continuing republican crackup. earlier this week, we learned that dick armey is breaking up with his tea party group freedom works and then we learned freedom works is kind of crumbling from within due to internal disputes over its strategy. that leaves a mantle of leadership for the tea party wing of the republican party wide open. that is a lot of power and a lot of fund-raising

china is doubling down on energy research. we can't do that for economic reasons. >> right. >> i like winning. >> budget is about policy, and it creates your priorities. >> the other thing is, there is a big issue -- big economic issue beyond jobs and beyond the deficits. and that is how do we create an economy in which the middle class is growing, in which people work hard and can get ahead? and all the things that you mentioned are important to that task. so we can't give up on that. >> two other points also. if by going after discretionary -- that's just another form of kicking the can down the road. you know, if you're not going to invest in education or the future, that is no different than not attacking -- >> can i also tell you also, it is -- it's also being a doctor. i always talk about being a doctor that opens up a patient, sees cassi s cancer, closes you you're fine. that's also a doctor who decides they're going to decide to take off a wart. erskine bowles said every dime washington took in went to pay off medicaid
